Hands-On With THQ’s E3 WWE SD vs RAW 2011

June 10th, 2010

Image THQ is shaking up its wrestling plans at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this year. The publisher will be unveiling not one but two WWE games at the show: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 (due later this fall)

This year in SVR 2011, every chair shot you take, every table you crash through, and every ladder you leap from will be more like a real physical object than ever before. That’s thanks to a new physics system that looks to affect objects in all match types across the game but will have the most powerful impact in the TLC (Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) matches. If you’ve ever seen one, you know it’s one of the most exciting match types the WWE has to offer, where both Superstars in the ring have an arsenal of–you guessed it–tables, ladders, and steel chairs at their disposal. How the wrestlers use those objects is up to them–from the direct approach of bashing one another with whatever is at hand, to more complex architectural violence, such as leaning one ladder against another for use as a launching ramp, or stacking tables on top of one another…for no other reason than it looks cool when a body crashes through it.

WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2011 on E3

WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2011

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011: The first WWE licensed video game of the post Jakks Pacific era by THQ. Was confirmed by THQ CEO Brian Farrell to be shown at E3.

What we know: At this point we really dont know much. We do know that Paul Bearer and Chris Jericho have provided voice overs for the game.

What we think we know: I believe that this years games focus will be online. With THQ expanding the online modes of the SVR series. Like what was seen with the UFC 2010 Undisputed Community site, I believe that THQ will try to combine the online SVR community to the game in some way. Some ideas that were discussed, online stat tracking, tournaments, and of course the shared creations. Imagine logging into the SVR Community site and in one place you will have the ability to view and select for download new community created content. Once you start the game, the contents would then be downloaded to your system. With stats tracking, it would be much more in depth then just simple win or loss records. The stats would track everything from how many times you put people through tables or how many times you used international(foreign) objects.

I also expect that the RTWM mode to be expanded upon and to incorporate more complex branching story lines.

Highly Unlikely but we can dream: A concrete plan on how to handle dlc on a ongoing weekly basis. A brand new engine that will completely solve all of the myriad issues with the gameplay but more then likely create entirely new ones for which forum members to complain about.
